little children, these things write I unto you, As a teenager, one of my favorite shows on television was Perry Mason. (Of course, I saw it in syndication) Perry Mason was an attorney whose clients all found there way into suspicion's path. Usually, they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and, of course, they would do something silly like pick up a knife that had been used to murder some poor soul. And, as you can imagine, the police just happen to arrive on the scene while the innocent client stands holding the murder weapon, standing over the deceased, with no one else in sight. To borrow the phrase of my dad, "It doesn't look good." Enter Perry Mason, the great attorney. In fact, so great that he never lost a case. That's right, it didn't matter how guilty his clients appeared to be, Perry always got through to the truth and exposed the real criminal. For an hour I would sit glued to my seat, trying to figure out who really committed the crime and, more importantly, trying to determine how Perry Mason could possibly get his client out of the jam they were in. He never failed to set the client free. Perry Mason was a great attorney. Of course, he's fictional. Just a television character. He doesn't really exist. But, my friends, there IS a great attorney...in fact THE Great Attorney... ...His Name is Jesus. You see, the Bible tells us in I John 2:1 that Jesus is our "advocate." The word "advocate" in the original Greek language is used of a legal advisor, pleader, proxy or someone who comes forward on behalf of and as the representative of another....what we might term, an attorney. Now, Perry Mason's record was incredible, but his clients were all INNOCENT. What I find most amazing about the Great Attorney, Jesus Christ, is that all of His "clients" are GUILTY. That's right, you and I are guilty of the charges against us. We have sinned. We have committed the "crime" and deserve the judgment and punishment of the Judge. It doesn't look good. And punishment is exactly what we would receive, if it weren't for our Attorney. The wonderful thing about Jesus is it doesn't matter what sins we've committed, He is willing to forgive us and wipe our record clean. Doesn't matter what kind of jam we have gotten ourselves into, if we go to Him with a genuine desire for forgiveness and repentance, then He will extend His grace upon our iniquities. My friend, what crime are you guilty of this morning? Can you say with assurance that your record is clean today? Or, is there some sin that you need to confess and get right? The Great
Attorney, why not talk with Him this morning? You know...He's
never failed to set His clients free. Free from sin,
that "If
the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." |
