March 1,
2001 -- Issue #328 "Great
is our Lord, and of great power: It
happened again today. Jacob
(my 3 1/2 month old baby boy if you are new to the
devotionals) woke up this morning with one thing on his
mind... ...something
for breakfast! I
quickly opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of
mommy's expressed milk.
Of course, being in the refrigerator, it was cold and
needed to be warmed up before I let Jacob drink it. Jacob
had other ideas.
He
began to squirm and whine and get really fussy with me
because he wasn't able to get that bottle RIGHT NOW.
I gently explained things to him.
I told him, "that's not what is best for
you." He
wanted that bottle now, in his way.
But, I had to make him wait and do things my way.
Not because I wanted to see him squirm and whine and
cry, but rather because I know that cold milk will give him
a stomach ache.
Warming up the milk is what is best for him, even
though he didn't want to wait for that. You
know, sometimes I find that we, as believers, act like
little Jacob in our relationship with God... ...we
want it our way and we want it NOW! Know
what I mean?
We get a bit impatient and we begin to squirm and
whine a bit.
Sometimes we get downright fussy.
Why isn't God answering that prayer?
Why isn't He giving me what I asked for? We
tend to want things now, in our own way, if we're not
careful.
And yet, the Lord stands patiently by us and
explains, "that's not what is best for you." And
He sometimes makes us wait and do things His way instead of
our own.
Not because He wants to see us squirm and whine and
cry, but because He knows what we are asking for will make
us ache.
He knows better than we do what is best for us. Christian,
maybe this morning you've been a bit discouraged because a
prayer request hasn't been answered.
Maybe you are beginning to squirm and whine a bit in
your relationship with God.
Understand this, perhaps it isn't God's timing yet.
He may be simply saying, "Wait, the time isn't
right." Or,
He may know something you don't.
He may know that granting your request will cause
problems that you can't foresee.
Perhaps an unanswered prayer simply means... Have a "Wonderful DAY in Christ," |
