March 7,
2001 -- Issue #332 "But
be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, Every
single day I receive hundreds of emails. Yep,
you read that correctly HUNDREDS of emails every day.
Some days I receive as many as 400-500 emails from
various people!
Between
my online ministry and my online business, there are many
occasions for people to contact me.
And, of course, there are also those who send me
email that I don't request at all - you know, those who send
you the emails about how to make a billion dollars in 30
days?
It's the internet's equivalent to junk mail. I've
gotten so busy during the past six months (don't let that
stop you from emailing me an encouraging note about these
devotionals...hint, hint :-) that I've actually had to
create some time management rules to apply to my incoming
mail. When
an email comes in, I have three choices of what to do with
it... 1.
Delete it
because it has no value to me. (Those "get rich
quick schemes" are included here!) 2.
File it away in an email folder to respond later. 3.
Act on it immediately. It's
that simple.
One of three options applies to every single
communication I receive via email. You
know, the Bible is also a series of communications from
various people.
Inspired by God, people like Paul and John and Peter
and David and a host of others wrote both the Old and New
Testaments as God's guidebook for our lives.
It is almost like an enormous bundle of email for us
to read through. What
can we do with the Word of God? Those
same three things:
We can discard what it says as if it has no real
value to our lives.
Or, we can file it away somewhere in our minds, with
plans to get to it "later."
Or, we can do what God intends for us to do and act
on it immediately, applying it to all that we say and do. James
tells us that we are to be "doers" of the Word.
That means we aren't to click the delete button and
pretend that it doesn't apply to us.
It means we aren't to put it off until another day in
order to become obedient.
But, rather, it means we are to do what God instructs
us RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. Christian,
God's Word isn't junk mail.
It also isn't a suggestion that we can consider for a
while before deciding if we really want to put it into
practice.
It's our guidebook.
It's our source of faith.
It's God's love letter to each of us.
And
so, right now, there are three options for how you will
handle God's Word this morning. Discard,
Delay, or Dive In! What is your choice going to be? Have a "Wonderful DAY in Christ,"Jimmy D. Brown \o/ Praise Jesus! |
