May 11,
2001 -- Issue #371 "Choose
you this day whom ye will serve...but as for me WE
WILL SERVE THE LORD...AND IMPACT OUR PATHWAY. If
you have ever traveled America's highways, then chances are
you've seen their sign alongside the road. The
Adopt-A-Highway program has been working in cooperation with
local, state and national companies to clean up and beautify
the nation's road system. Businesses,
both large and small can "adopt" a stretch of
highway in order to provide cleaning and maintenance for the
section. In exchange for supporting the Adopt-A-Highway
program, these businesses are allowed to advertise their
company through custom paneled signs. In
recent years, a growing number of Adopt-an-Intersection and
even Adopt-a-Community projects have sprung up. Again, the
focus is on cleaning up and bringing beauty to specified
intersection or community. As
I thought about passing by one such sign earlier this week,
the thought struck me... ...we,
as believers in Christ Jesus, ought to start our own
adoption program. Maybe an Adopt-a-Neighborhood program. Or,
perhaps an Adopt-a-Place of Employment program. How about an
Adopt-a-Grocery Store or an Adopt-a-Post Office? Better
still, we could begin a program to encompass everywhere we
go... ...an
Adopt-a-Pathway project. The
point? To help clean up and bring beauty to the lives of
those in our everyday pathway. That's right, our friends,
family members, co-workers, neighbors and business
associates. Those in our everyday pathway. The
clerk at the grocery store, those in front of and behind us
at Wal-Mart, the person who cuts our hair, the folks we pass
while walking through the parking lot at the mall...those in
our pathway. Why
not start an Adopt-a-Pathway project where we do our best to
help clean up and bring beauty to the lives of those we meet
each day? A friendly smile, a word of encouragement, a
helping hand, a look of concern, a listening ear, a shoulder
to cry on...these are just a few of the ways to adopt our
pathways. And,
why should we do it? To advertise, of course! By beginning
our Adopt-a-Pathway program we get to advertise the King of
Kings, Jesus Christ. You see, when we help clean up and
bring beauty into the lives of others, there will naturally
be an opportunity to tell them the reason we are doing it.
The reason is to show the love of Christ to them. Actions
speak louder than words, you know. What
about it, Christian? Feel like adopting today? Why not make
an effort to help clean up the dirty and cluttered lives of
others... ...and
bring the beauty of the Gospel into their pathway?! Have a "Wonderful DAY in Christ," |
