MUSTARD ON MY TIE

"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer,
he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was." - James 1:23, 25

Years ago, as a member of management at a quick copy shop, I had to wear a tie as part of my regular business attire.

I remember one day I went home for lunch and ate a couple of sandwiches.  I had an entire hour for lunch and it didn't take long for me to make the drive to and from work, so I had some extra time to kick back in the recliner and relax.

When it was time to head back to work, I went into the bathroom to check my appearance.  And I noticed MUSTARD on my tie!

I quickly cleaned it off, but it, of course, left a large stain on the tie.  I went to the bedroom to pick out another tie, but something happened that distracted me.  I don't remember what it was, and it really doesn't matter.  The point is, I forgot all about that mustard stain.

Until later that afternoon, the wonderful, kind-hearted, "I'd never laugh at you" co-workers of mine began having their fun.  I had taken a look into the mirror and had intended to do something with what I saw, but instead I forgot about it.

You know, the book of James says that those who hear God's word and don't do it are kind of like me that day. They see something in the spiritual mirror that needs attention, but they get distracted.  Who knows what it might be?  Perhaps it is their career or maybe it is a relationship.  Maybe it is recreation or a hobby.  It could be money or possessions or fame or popularity.

It doesn't really matter what it is, they just get distracted.  And they forget all about what God's Word had instructed them to do.  Oh, just like myself with that mustard stain, they intended to do something...

...but they never got around to it.

Christian, maybe this morning it is time for you and I to take a look into the spiritual mirror that hangs in the hallway of our lives.   What do we see?  Do we see sin that needs to be confessed and abandoned?  Do we see burden that needs to be given to Christ?  Is there some job in the mirror that the Lord has given us to do?  Some lost soul that He wants us to share the Gospel with?

What do we see?

I encourage you to take a look today.  Right now.  Don't delay.  And whatever you see, be a DOER and not a HEARER only.

Turn those good intentions into good works.

Have a "Wonderful DAY in Christ,"
