SPITTING OUT THE WORD

"As newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:"
- I Peter 2:2

I've noticed something about infants.

Our son, Jacob, is now 14 months old.  And I've noticed something about him, and others his age.

It happens around feeding time.  Someone gives him something to eat, and Jacob does one of two things:

If he likes what he's been given, he eats it.  In fact, he gobbles it up with gusto!  He grins and giggles and gets all of it that he can.

But, if he doesn't like what he's been given, he spits it out.  He rejects it.  He clamps his mouth closed and will not budge.  A frown creases his little forehead and he becomes defiant.

I've noticed something about infants.  Spiritual infants that is.  Those who are still immature as Christians do very much the same thing with God's Word.

Yep, when they hear the Preacher or their Sunday School teacher or some concerned friend or loved one share something they like from the Word of God, they eat it.  In fact, they gobble it up with gusto!  When someone tells them something comforting and encouraging from the Word of God, they grin and giggle.  When someone shares a word of praise and gratitude from God's Word they get all of it that they can.

But when the Preacher says something they don't like - when the Sunday School teacher crosses the line into the hard stuff - when that friend or loved one shares something they don't want to hear, they spit it out.  They reject it.  When someone shares something convicting and correcting (in love, mind you) they clamp their spiritual mouths closed and will not budge.  You better believe a frown begins creasing their foreheads as they become defiant to God's Word.

Infants.  It's one thing for a baby to spit out food he doesn't like, it's another thing for a believer in Jesus Christ to reject what God is trying to say to them.

What about you, Christian?  Are you a spiritual infant, or have you matured?  Do you reject God's Word when it convicts and corrects?

What is God trying to say to you this morning?  Has He been trying to convey a message to you through your pastor or teacher, or through some friend or loved one?

Have you been rejecting it?

What will you do today with what He is saying to you?

Will you eat -- or will you spit it out?

Have a "Wonderful DAY in Christ,"
