April 24,
2002 -- Issue #564 "I
have fought a good fight, "It's
hard to stay on course when everyone seems to be trying to
run you off the road." That's what
I was thinking as we drove down the busy road.
Cars were zooming everywhere, darting in and out of
lanes.
Horns were honking as they swerved directly in front
of other drivers.
Large trucks slammed on their brakes. There were
even people driving on the wrong side of the road at times,
coming directly at us! And I kept
thinking, "It's hard to stay on course when everyone
seems to be trying to run you off the road." And that's
what it seemed like.
I probably even said that aloud, "Why is
everyone trying to run us off the road?!" Here I was,
Mr. Courteous Driver, trying to navigate the already
treacherous roads and everyone seemed to have no regard for
me.
They just wanted me out of the way so they could do
their thing.
Yet,
through it all, I somehow managed (through the grace of
God!) to stay on course.
I wasn't a perfect driver, but with the Lord's help I
was able to arrive safely home from the journey. Isn't that
just like the Christian life? You see,
"It's hard to stay on course when everyone seems to be
trying to run you off the road." Know what I
mean?
There's an illness.
Or an unexpected bill that we don't have the money to
pay. Or a temptation.
Or an argument with a loved one. Or a co-worker who
just does their best to irritate us. Or a disappointment.
There are
these things that zoom around us, darting in and out of our
lives.
These things that seem to be trying their best to
sidetrack us and keep us from traveling down the narrow road
that Christ has called us to. Here we
are, trying to navigate the already treacherous roads of
life and then we are faced with these things trying to force
us into a ditch. Know how to
stay the course?
Rely on God's grace. We aren't perfect drivers --
rather perfect people – but with the Lord's help we are
able to arrive safely home from the journey. Christian,
does it feel like someone or something is trying to force
you off the road today?
Is there some other "car" in your life that
is zooming you and crowding you off course in your
relationship with Christ? Rely upon
God's grace.
Call upon Him and ask Him to help you along the way.
He's ready to help you drive safely home to be with
Him. Only
a few more miles to go. |
