PICK ME! PICK ME! PICK ME!

"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying,
Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?
Then said I, Here am I; send me." -- Isaiah 6:8

I looked down in absolute dread.

It was my sophomore year in high school.  And I was in my foreign language class, which happened to be French.

And Mrs. Lewellen was looking the class over.

Here's how it worked.  Mrs. Lewellen (who was my French class teacher, in case you haven't guessed :o) would name a French verb and its tense and we would fill-in-the-blanks.

For example:  She might say the French verb for "eat."  And she would begin asking the 6 verb tenses of the French language (if I'm remembering correctly)...

1. He
2. She
3. They
4.  You
5.  I
6. We

Something like that.  :o)

Let's suppose we were stating the tenses of the word "eat."  She would point at a student and say "Vous."  Not only did you have to remember that "Vous" meant "you" but you then had to quote the verb tense of the word "eat" that matched up with "you."

Then, she'd move on to someone else and say "Elle" meaning "she."

She would do this over and over and over again.

And I would look down in absolute dread.  I knew she was going to call on me.  And I did not want her to do it. I thought if maybe I didn't make eye contact, or if I hid my face, or if I adjusted my position -- maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't call on me.

But, she always did.

I wasn't anything like Isaiah, who heard the call of the Lord and said, "Here am I; send me."  Isaiah was the student who would raise his hand quickly and say "Pick me!  Pick me!  Pick me!"

I was the student hiding under the desk saying, "Yes, pick him!  Yes, pick him!"  :o)

You know, it's one thing to dread having a foreign language teacher call on you to share some verb that you didn't know and would never be useful to you in any part of your life here on earth ---

...it's another thing to try to hide from God when He calls.

May you and I never try to avoid His call upon our lives. When God says "I've got something for you to do," may we never try to avoid eye contact, or hide our faces, or adjust our position in any way.

May we instead echo the words of Isaiah, "Here am I; send me."

Christian, I'm convinced of this.  Right now, God has something for YOU to do with your life.   It may be as simple as sending a card of encouragement to a sick neighbor, or something as dramatic as surrendering your life to the foreign mission field.  Chances are, it's somewhere in between.

And I'm convinced that He is working on  your heart RIGHT NOW -- and you know what it is that He wants from you.

What will you do?  Will you hope He doesn't call on you? Will you hide your face and hope He goes away?  Will you plead with Him to choose someone else?

Or will you go to the Lord in prayer RIGHT NOW, and say...

..."Pick me!  Pick me!  Pick me!"
